101 Information

Class participants will learn the fundamentals of basketball including dribbling, passing, and shooting. This class is a great step in preparing first time players for team play. During each session, participants will work on drills designed to improve their ball handling and teach them different types of passes and the correct shooting form. All participants should wear athletic shoes. All sessions will be held at Ila Elementary School unless otherwise stated.

Instructor: BJ Stone

Coach BJ has been coaching basketball at many levels for 17+ years and is a certified Lay Coach. He has coached recreation league teams, All Star teams and Athens Premier League teams in Madison County. He has coached at the AAU level as well, taking teams across the country and even Puerto Rico to compete. Coach BJ has also coached aside a 7 time GHSA State Championship coach and even trained and coached many kids of D1 basketball coaches.

Winter 2021-2022 Schedules

6U-17U League Information (Ages 5-17)

PRACTICES - Will begin in mid-late November. These practices will be held at the various elementary school gyms in Madison County. The MCRD would like to thank all of the schools in the county for graciously allowing us to use their facilities for so many years.

GAMES - Will begin early in December and run until the beginning of February. They will be played at Comer Elementary School Gym, Ila Elementary School Gym or Hull Sanford Elementary School Gym. Games will end around mid-February. Away games will be held at surrounding agency departments. This is also the All-Stars season; players selected for teams will continue practices and tournaments through the beginning of March.

All players are provided a team jersey and pair of shorts by MCRD. Players must provide their own athletic shoes.

Late registrations are taken as needed with a $25 late fee.

The purpose of the ROCK Basketball Academy is to provide fundamental and advanced basketball skills to young basketball players. Each session will focus on improving each player's ball handling, passing, shooting and defensive skills, while emphasizing the importance of teamwork on the basketball court. The goal of the ROCK Basketball Academy is to prepare young athletes for their future on the court, the classroom, and in life through their commitment and hard work.

  • 21 years of high school coaching experience

    • 12 years of head coaching experience

    • 5 years as Head Girls Coach

    • 7 years as Head Boys Coach

  • Coach of the Year on 4 occasions

Assistant Instructors

  • Ryan Moon: Associate Degree in General Studies. Currently studying for Bachelor's in Business Administration. He has 17 years in playing multiple sports. Basketball being the most experienced sport. He has many accomplishments: Madison County alumnus varsity basketball player, being the start PG freshman to senior year. Former varsity player at New Hampshire Technical Institution, winning the 2019 USCAA National Championship. He's been coaching since 2021 with Madison County Recreation Department in the 8U boys league. Ryan's goal is to continue his career in coaching and training, while giving back to the community.

  • Kirkland Moon: Associate Degree in General Studies. Currently studying for Bachelor's in Business Administration of entrepreneurship. He has 21 years of playing multiple sports with basketball being the one sport that he experienced the most. He played for Madison County High School for four years and was on varsity for two years. The former Raider Alumni went to college at New Hampshire Technical Institution for the 2019-2021. He has been coaching for three years with Madison County Recreation Department; 2015-2016, 2016-2017, and the 8U boys league in 2021. Kirkland's goal is to continue his career in coaching and training the youth while giving back to the community.
